The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has rejected allegations that it failed to protect Ministry of Finance whistleblower Grandy Ntumbo, saying the claims are inaccurate and misleading.
ACC Head of Corporate Communications Joseph Mwenya says the Commission has issued the clarification to address misconceptions arising from recent media reports on Mr Ntumbo and the alleged misappropriation of funds at the Ministry of Finance.
In a statement to ZNBC News, Mr Mwenya explained that the Commission received an anonymous complaint in 2020 alleging the misappropriation of funds at the Ministry of Finance.
He said during the investigations, Mr Ntumbo voluntarily provided additional information.
Mr Mwenya said after it became clear Mr Ntumbo’s identity required protection under the Public Interest Disclosure (Protection of Whistleblowers) Act No. 4 of 2010, the Commission placed him in a safe house.
He said Mr Ntumbo remains in the safe house to date.
Mr Mwenya added that the decision to provide the accommodation was also based on Mr Ntumbo’s claim that his life was in danger following his complaint.
He further said that while investigations were underway, Mr Ntumbo instituted legal proceedings against the Attorney General and the ACC.
According to Mr Mwenya, Mr Ntumbo sought a court order requiring the Commission to continue providing him with safe accommodation and to give him updates on the case every 90 days.
He said the ACC has complied with the court’s ruling.
Mr Mwenya added that the matter remains before the courts and that responsibility for progressing the case rests with Mr Ntumbo.
He stressed the Commission’s commitment to transparency, accountability and the protection of whistleblowers in accordance with the Public Interest Disclosure (Protection of Whistleblowers) Act No. 4 of 2010 and the Anti-Corruption Commission Act.
