President Hakainde Hichilema has accorded an official funeral to Southern Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Namani Monze, who died on 28 July 2026 at Choma General Hospital after an illness.
The President has also declared Tuesday, 4 August 2026 as a day of national mourning in honour of Dr. Monze’s distinguished contribution to the public service.
Confirming the development in a statement to ZNBC News, Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa said Dr. Monze immensely contributed to the development of ophthalmology in the health sector and provided leadership in actualizing government programmes in Southern Province.
Mr. Kangwa said Dr. Monze will be buried on 4 August 2026 at his farm in Bwacha Ward, off the Great North Road in Choma District.
He added that the one-day national mourning will be observed from 06:00 hours to 18:00 hours, during which all flags will fly at half-mast.

Update: Dr Namani Monze has since been laid to rest in Choma, with tributes from the First Family, Senior Chief Hamusonde and his relatives.
