The race they conceded

The Electoral Commission of Zambia declared President Hichilema the winner of the 13 August poll with about 61.5% of the vote against Brian Mundubile’s 38.5%, handing him a second five-year term without the need for a runoff.

The four conceding candidates finished behind the two frontrunners. What the concession list does not yet include is a message from Mundubile himself, the candidate against whom the election was decided. The election period included a brief nationwide suspension of counting and opposition allegations around election-night arrests, and whether the main challenger accepts the result will do much to set the political temperature of the new term.

The concessions join a growing list of post-election congratulations to the President, including from the Emoluments Commission and the teachers’ union ZUPED.
