The Zambian Economist is an independent publication covering the Zambian economy — the data behind it, the policy shaping it, and what both mean for the people and businesses living with the consequences.

We exist because most economic reporting in Zambia stops at the announcement. A figure is published, a statement is issued, and the story ends there. The part that matters — what the number actually does to a trader’s stock costs, a contractor’s payment cycle or a farmer’s input prices — usually goes unwritten. That is the part we write.

What we cover

  • Macroeconomic analysis — inflation, the kwacha, copper, debt, interest rates and energy
  • Public finance and the national budget
  • Banking, credit and financial markets
  • Mining, agriculture and the sectors that carry the economy
  • Governance and accountability where they affect economic outcomes
  • Practical guidance for businesses navigating regulation, tax and finance

How we work

Every figure we publish is attributed to a named primary source and dated. Forecasts are labelled as forecasts. We analyse policies rather than personalities, and we do not endorse candidates or predict election outcomes. Our full approach is set out in our Editorial Standards, and our approach to errors in the Corrections Policy.

Who writes

In-house analysis is published under the Zambian Economist Analyst byline. Contributed articles carry the author’s own name. We welcome submissions from economists, practitioners and researchers — see the Submit an Article page.

Working with us

The publication is funded by placements rather than by influence. Organisations can take a listing in our business directory, promote an event through our events listings, or take advertising space. None of these confer any say over editorial coverage. A media kit and audience statistics are available on request.
