What roles did Mutotwe Kafwaya hold?
Kafwaya was born on 28 August 1976 and trained as an accountant. The National Assembly of Zambia records that he held a BA (Hons) in Accounting, a CIMA qualification and an MBA.
He won the Lunte parliamentary seat in 2016 and retained it in 2021 on the Patriotic Front ticket. He was appointed Minister of Works and Supply in November 2018 before moving to Transport and Communication in July 2019. After the 2021 change of government, he returned to the back benches and served on several parliamentary committees.
The circumstances of his death remain under scrutiny
Police said Kafwaya was shot during a joint security operation at a residence in Kabulonga on 14 August and later died. His family identified the body on 19 August, according to the police account. The Zambian Economist’s earlier report sets out that account and the questions raised after his family had reported him missing.
The farewell service gives relatives, friends, church members and the public a formal moment to remember his life. It does not settle the disputed public questions surrounding the operation in which he was fatally wounded. Those questions require evidence, due process and a full account from the responsible institutions.
The service is expected to end at 16:30 after body viewing. Mourners have been asked to gather at Tabernacle of David Assembly-City Mission Church in Lusaka.
