Doing Business in Zambia

Practical guides to starting, financing and running a business in Zambia, with reporting on regulation, costs and economic conditions.

Most economic coverage in Zambia stops at the announcement. A rate is set, a budget is read, a figure is published, and the part that decides whether a business survives goes unwritten.

This is the practical half of what we do. How to register, what you owe, where the money is, and what the rules actually require. Every guide here is built on primary sources, dated, and updated when the rules change.

Getting registered

How to Register a Company in Zambia, the choice between a business name and a limited company, the documents, the steps, realistic timelines, and the ZRA, NAPSA and NHIMA registrations that have to follow. Start here if you are not yet formally registered, because almost everything else depends on it.

Finding finance

CDF Empowerment Grants and Loans, K40 million per constituency in 2026, a fifth of it set aside for youth, women and community empowerment. Who qualifies, which committee decides, what documents are required, and the six reasons applications fail.

For the cost of commercial borrowing rather than concessional finance, our analysis of what the Bank of Zambia policy rate means for your loan explains why the rate you are quoted sits so far above the rate in the headlines.

Understanding the conditions you trade in

Sectors worth understanding

Salaula: the economics of Zambia’s second-hand clothing trade, where the value is added, who the trade employs, and why the argument about rebuilding a domestic garment industry is harder than it looks.

How we write these

Fees, thresholds and eligibility rules change, and a guide with a stale figure in it is worse than no guide. So every number here is attributed to the institution that published it and carries the date it refers to. Where we cannot verify a figure at source, we say so rather than repeating what other sites have published. Our full approach is in our Editorial Standards.
