Most business planning in Zambia is reactive, and it does not have to be. A large share of the events that will change your costs this year are scheduled, published in advance, and ignored.

This is the calendar. Bookmark it, or put the dates in your phone now.

The four that matter most

DateEventWhy it matters
30 JulyZamStats July inflation releaseSets the disinflation narrative going into the election
13 AugustGeneral election, polls 06:00–18:00Six to ten weeks of altered operating conditions
28–29 SeptemberBank of Zambia MPC meetingFirst post-election policy signal; sets your borrowing cost
Late September2027 National Budget addressTax measures that shape your entire 2027 cost base

Monthly and recurring

Inflation — last Thursday of every month. The Zambia Statistics Agency publishes the Consumer Price Index, including headline, food and non-food inflation and provincial breakdowns. Remaining 2026 releases: 30 July, 27 August, 24 September, 29 October, 26 November, 31 December (confirm each with ZamStats).
Why you care: it is the single best read on where your input costs and your customers’ spending power are heading. See our inflation tracker.

Bank of Zambia Monetary Policy Committee — quarterly. 2026 meetings so far: 11–12 February (rate cut to 13.5%), 11–12 May (cut to 13.25%). Next: 28–29 September. A further meeting typically falls in November.
Why you care: it sets the benchmark from which your facilities are priced. See what the policy rate means for your loan.

Government securities auctions — regular. The Bank of Zambia runs Treasury bill and government bond auctions on a published schedule. Yields tell you what the government is paying for money, which is the floor under everything else.

Trade and GDP statistics — monthly and quarterly. ZamStats publishes monthly trade data and quarterly GDP. Q1 2026 real growth came in at 7.7% year on year, driven largely by agriculture.

Tax and compliance deadlines

Confirm all of these against the Zambia Revenue Authority’s published calendar, since dates shift when they fall on weekends and public holidays.

ObligationTypical deadline
VAT return and payment18th of the following month
PAYE10th of the following month
Withholding tax14th of the following month
Turnover tax14th of the following month
Provisional tax (quarterly)31 March, 30 June, 30 September, 31 December
Annual income tax return21 June following year end
NAPSA contributions10th of the following month

Missing these costs penalties and interest, and — more expensively — a compliance record that follows you into tender evaluations.

Election period timeline

DateEvent
23 JuneECZ 50-day presidential campaign timetable commenced, running in ten five-day phases across all provinces
Late July – early AugustBallot verification and dispatch to districts, with parties and accredited observers invited to witness
13 AugustPolls open 06:00, close 18:00
Following daysCounting, verification and declaration

Practical planning for this period is in how Zambian businesses should plan for the election.

Budget season

The Minister of Finance and National Planning presents the national budget to the National Assembly in late September, pursuant to Article 202 of the Constitution. The last two were delivered on Friday 26 September 2025 (the 2026 budget) and Friday 27 September 2024.

The 2026 budget was K253.1 billion, or 27.4% of GDP — with K206.5 billion from domestic revenue, K12.1 billion in grants and K34.5 billion in borrowing.

After presentation, business of the House is suspended for twenty working days while committees conduct sector budget analysis. That window is when submissions from industry associations actually influence outcomes. If your sector has a position, prepare it in August, not October.

Agricultural and seasonal dates

Zambia’s economy still runs on the rains, so the agricultural year is an economic calendar in its own right.

PeriodWhat happens
November – MarchRainy season. Determines the following year’s food inflation and hydropower generation
April – JuneHarvest
May onwardsCrop marketing season; the Food Reserve Agency sets its floor price (white maize was set at K347 this season)
June – OctoberDry season. Peak construction and mining activity

If you want an early read on next year’s inflation, watch the rainfall reports from December, not the CPI in June.

International dates that reach Zambia

  • US Federal Reserve meetings — move the dollar, which moves copper, which moves the kwacha. See copper and the kwacha
  • Chinese economic data releases — copper demand
  • 1 January 2027 — the phased United States tariff on refined copper imports is scheduled to begin at 15%
  • IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, October — programme discussions and updated forecasts

How to actually use this

Three habits, each of which takes under ten minutes a month.

  1. Diary the four big dates now. MPC, inflation, budget, election.
  2. On the last Thursday of each month, read one number — non-food inflation. It tells you more about underlying cost pressure than the headline.
  3. Set a September reminder to review your 2027 pricing after the budget address, not in January when everyone else does.

The bottom line

Almost nothing in this calendar is a surprise. That is the point.

The businesses that get caught out by a rate decision, a tax change or an election slowdown are rarely caught out by the event. They are caught out by not having looked at the date.
